Lochia (Ode to the baby tree)
From March 2020 onwards, as the whole world went into lockdown from the Covid-19 pandemic, I was planting trees on the most remote location on the UK mainland. 60,000 trees were planted at the Mary Anns’ site on Knoydart, you will be able to see them as the ferry brings you over Loch Nevis towards the peninsula, Keep your eye out for the `
Plastic Mary’ and look above!
Named Lochia' as in
after-birth, this a little baby Alder tree, sat amongst its vast landscape where it will spend the rest of it
s life, eventually changing the face of that landscape by fertilising the ground and encouraging bio-diversity and wildlife to life amongst itself and the other trees.
The original photograph reminded me of the Earth giving birth to a tree, and encouraged me to keep on planting trees. Afterall giving to the Earth is much better than taking from her, and she protected my from the virus as my hands were in the soil the whole time.
The original is drawn with Micron ink pens, acrylic paints and acrylic inks. The print was created from a high resolution scan of the original and professionally printed here on Knoydart using pigment dye inks and 310g archival matt paper. A poem dedicated to `Lochia' is printed on the back and signed and dated by the artist.
